Mr. Holland's Opus

"Mr. Holland's Opus" is my favorite movie because he struggles with so many different obstacles in his life. He becomes a teacher because he seems to have nowhere else to turn to. Then he learns that his son Cole has a 90% hearing deficiency which is ironic because he is a music teacher. He works for 30 years (until 1995) when the entire music department at his high school is cut. Over those 30 years he's been working on his "American Symphony" and some of his former students perform the piece much to his surprise at his "encore" appearance. I believe that the title has a double meaning: 1. his symphonic masterpiece which at the movies end finally becomes a reality. 2. the positive legacy he left with so many of his present and past students! I think that students, fellow teachers and others were influenced positively just by knowing him as a teacher, a composer and an overall person!

Mr. Holland's Opus

Tender was the Night

Tender was the night this past Sunday night when I had the privelege of seeing Mr. Jackson Browne in concert in York.  He came out and opened with the rememberable "Barracades of Heaven" and a hearty round of applause.  Later in the show he sang a classic hidden favorite "These Days" where he says, "today I sit on cobblestones, and count the tones in quartertones".  His last three songs were in this order: "Doctor My Eyes", "The Pretender" and the expected "Running on Empty".  Of all the concerts I have seen, this was one of the most memorable.  Now I can finally say, Jackson, my eyes have seen the years, and the slow parade of tears."

October Birthday's

October 3rd:  Lydias's Birthday
October 14th:  Dale's and Teresa's Birthdays
October 19th:  Ray's Birthday
October 21st: Josh's, Duane's, and Andy's Birthdays
October 23rd:  Stew's Birthday

October Birthdays are shared by both Libra and Scorpio. Libra in the first half of the month, and Scorpio in the second half.
W
Libra (September 23 - October 22)

Libra is the only zodiac symbol that's neither animal nor human -- but surely that doesn't make you any less human. In fact, Libra is among the most sociable of the signs. As scales of old were really "balances," so to do you seek balance in all that Libra does. You respond to situations with grace as Libra attempts to put others at ease. Artistically, Libra tries to balance form, content, colors and elements, and for this reason can be drawn toward creative endeavors.

Scorpio (October 22 - November 21)
Scorpio is the only sign that has three animal totems. First, there is the well-known Scorpion with its active tail. Second, as the Scorpio learns to master its passion and hold its instincts at bay, it changes into the Eagle. The Eagle has more perspective, for it flies high above the surface of circumstances, swooping down with its power only to kill prey for food. In its third form, the Scorpion becomes the always-peaceful dove. The real meaning of Scorpio is thus shown. Scorpio is about metamorphosis. Scorpios transform the painful poisons of possessive passion into a higher consciousness based on universal love.

Cut Footloose!

As a devout music lover, I have had the opportunity to listen to and analyze many albums.  That being said, I think that one of the best soundtrack albums of the early 1980s is  "Footloose."  There is a very wide array of similar yet different songs on it;  everything from the almost gleefully thematic-like "Let's Hear it For the Boy," to Ariel Moore's desire for her "Hero," to the reality-checking "Somebody's Baby" to the movies' love theme song done in duet-form harmony, "Almost Paradise."   The extended version of the soundtrack also includes John "Cougar" Mellencamp's "Hurts so Good" and Foreigner's love song, "Waiting For a Girl Like You."  I am a fan of both the movie and the soundtrack so next time you have a "Footloose" experience; cut loose!

To Kill a Mockingbird

When I was in 8th grade, the book we read for English class was "To Kill a Mockingbird."  The story is about a lawyer, Atticus Finch, his two children, Jem and Scout (Jean Louise), their friend Dill, and other selected townspeople such as creepy Arthur "Boo" Radley.  In the story, Mayella Ewell is murdered and negro Tom Robinson is arrested for it.  Atticus Finch does his best to defend Tom, but in early 20th century Alabama, the somewhat prejudicial people of the town find Tom guilty despite Atticus' valiant effort not only to clear Tom, but also to almost undeniably point the guilty finger at Mayella's father, Bob Ewell.  This should be, I believe, required reading for all American students.  I, for one, very much enjoyed the classic American novel and highly recommend it to all.

As the summer comes to an end, we are reminded of the good times we had. Specifically, we can't believe we never posted pictures from our annual Acadia Summer picnic. The picnic was a much needed break from our normal routine. It was great to be around good friends, playing games, having good conversation, enjoying the weather, and eating great food.  We selected some of our favorite photos for you to enjoy.

Change in seasons quotes

"I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by staying in the house.
So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air.
-  Nathaniel Hawthorne

"A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made.  The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air."-   Eric Sloane

"Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting
and autumn a mosaic of them all."
-   Stanley Horowitz

"The leaves fall, the wind blows, and the farm country slowly
changes from the summer cottons into its winter wools."
-   Henry Beston, Northern Farm

These are Quotes I found about the upcoming change in seasons.

Acadia News Puzzle No. 1

A Cryptoquip is a puzzle that replaces one letter with another letter.  For example, if in a puzzle a clue says "Clue: X equals N", a person would replace all the X's with the letter N.  Working with all the clues, a person would try to complete the puzzle.  Since most of the Cryptoquips will be questions, there will be an answer to the puzzle.  After solving the Cryptoquip, a person would try to solve the question.

Dan's TV Favs

When I was growing up, I had a few favorite actors/actresses and movies/shows.  My first favorite movie(s) were "Back to the Future I, II, & III."  That being said, my first favorite actor was, of course, Marty McFly; I mean Michael J. Fox.  I remember saying to myself, I wanna be super cool, highly respected and have a sweetheart girlfriend just like him!  At that time I also enjoyed watching the  prime-time television shows "Who's the Boss" and when I could, "Beverly Hills 90210."  On the a fore mentioned shows, I liked watching Shannen Doherty of "90210" and I swear, for a while, I had the biggest crush on Alyssa Milano's character, Samantha, on "Who's the Boss."  I figured,"look, all of my classmates try to be like them and they are really, really awesome!"  You may notice that most of my favorite actors and actresses appeared on my favorite programs and no offense, they just don't write them like they used to back in the later 80's and early 90's!  Ready? 1,2,3, Action!!!

The Colosseum Fun Center Bowling Review

Written by Stephen
The Colosseum Fun Center Is a very neat and modern Family Entertainment Center, Located in Camp Hill, PA. They twelve lanes with State of the art AMF, Qubica and Qubica-AMF equipment in the basement with an ajacent sports-pub style bar-lounge, and a large arcade and a main bar and grill style restaurant on the main level. They have the Bowler Entertainment System, scoring system, and a neat glow-bowling lighting system The guy who worked in the bowling area, Michael, was very friendly, he switched us to a different lane when the pinsetter broke-down, and after we were done bowling, he showed me the machine room were the pinsetters were and demonstrated how they operate. Overall the experience was fun, and like some neat, modern bowling alley in Europe.

My Journey

People attend musical concerts for many different reasons.  My parents, knowing what a huge Journey fan I am, purchased Foreigner & Journey tickets for my birthday a few years back.  When they gave them to me, I was in almost a mild state of shock and disbelief.  On the car ride over to the show in Hershey I kept telling myself, "as a loyal,die-hard Journey fan, you have to man up and not cry!" I was doing great until Foreigner started to perform "Waiting For a Girl Like You" and I just completely lost it.  I tried to pull myself together, but it was no use; my emotion card had been played.  I choked back the tears all the way through Journey's encore song, "Faithfully."  Looking back, I am not ashamed with myself.  Sometimes a persons emotions override  society's stereotypes!  Never be afraid to start a Journey.

Fun With Words, by Jonathan W.

It's not just that everybody loves words, everybody needs words.

Vocabulary is a tool we use to convey thoughts, ideas, emotions and truths, as well as lies.  It's fun! no one denies that.

Another benefit of conversing is the tactic of impressing our correspondents.  Everyone is impressed by someone with a good vocabulary.  To understand this, consider this phrase- "Hello!  How are you doing?"  Consider that compared with, "I offer you my genuine salutations, and convey my sincerest attempt to empathize with your individual strides!"

Now you should be asking yourself, 'Which greeting is more likely to promote the individual to a more intelligent response, or increase one's chances for a raise?'  Or similar reactions, of course.

Well, the secret to increasing growth in life is start from the basics; a good place to start with is increasing the very building blocks with which a conversation is constructed— the vocabulary.

We can do that by learning longer, more intelligent words.  Wowing your audience will be no sweat, then.

As it is good to learn the words, it is imperative that you understand the context upon which each is to be used.

Let's start from a few simple words that are easy to remember, and are easy to insert into everyday conversation.

Hippopotomonsrosesquippedalian  is simply a term pertaining to a very  long word.  first you need to sound it out, and then find a way to use it in common conversation.  For example, when you are introducing yourself to anyone, a good way to describe yourself is,  "I am a hippopotomonsrosesquipedalianist!" Or, "I enjoy long words!"  And then, you can add, "I was once a hippopotomonsosequippedaliophobiac, myself," which means, "I had a fear of long words."

There.  That's a good starting point.  The next word is easily used in everyday conversation.  We can use floccinaucihilipilification.  This is the act of perceiving something as worthless.  We're all privy to this habit.  If ever you're asked to undertake a task you're not altogether enthused about, you can simply express your enthusiasm using that word.  "I feel pressed upon by the floccinaucihilipilification of that task," and your corespondent will inevitably be less inclined to offer that request, in the future.

So we see that vocabulary is a good tool used to influence the way we relate to others.

Finally, The last word we'll look at can be used when you're around smokers.  After expressing an amount of disconcertion at the irritation of the thoughtlessness of the smoker, calmly express that you're especially given to pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis." You then point out that this is a "Lung disease caused by the inhalation of volcanic silica dust, or "cigarette smoke," which in itself is  half-truth, as silica dust is actually what is used in both glass and toothpaste.  But chances are, the smoker won't know that, and will feel somewhat impelled to extinguish the cigarette.

Hopefully you can see the amount of persuasion that can be caused by long words!

Hampton Lanes Bowling Review

Hampton Lanes Bowling Review
Written by Stephen

Hampton Lanes is a neat bowling alley in Northampton, PA. It is neat because it has an old school European-style feel. It has 24 AMF wooden lanes, Qubica Bowlland scoring, 1970's era ball returns and new Qubica-AMF pinsetters and masking units. The furnishings in front of the lanes are a mixture of circa – 1950's AMF curved corner sectional bench seats and modern Qubica seating systems with three different types of induvidual seats. This bowling alley is a fun place to visit on a Saturday afternoon when they offer family friendly glow-bowling. They have a very neat disco lighting system. The arcade is pretty good too. They have a scaled-down mini bowling game, with all of the general feauturies of a full size bowling alley, such as lanes with automatic bumpers, a pinsetter, automatic scoring and a ball elevator ball return system. This is one of my favorite bowling alleys to go to when I visit my Nani.

Play Ball 2011!

Well, it's finally baseball season again and I, for one, am thrilled!  I would like to make my 2011 postseason predictions to see how well I fare.  In the American League East, the Boston Red Sox look promising.  In the Central division, the somewhat surprising Cleveland Indians are likely candidates, and out in the Western division, the Texas Rangers look to repeat as pennant winners.  Over in the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies appear strong, the perenially dismal Pittsburgh Pirates are tearing up their division, and out West the Giants appear likely to repeat as division leaders.  When all is said & done, I actually am inclined to select this year's World Series champion as ... the Pittsburgh Pirates!!!!!  Crazy? Maybe!

Suburban Bowlerama Bowling Review

Suburban Bowlerama Bowling Review

Written by Stephen
Suburban Bowlerama is a bowling alley located on Queen Street, in York, Pa. It is neat because it has a neat somewhat retro feel yet at feels at the same time like a bowling alley in Europe. This is because it has styling elements, such as, chrome, neon, and glass block and at the same time it has a modern European-style scoring system called Brunswick classic, which is probably pretty rare in this country. My bowling Expirence was good here, except that I went there during the family friendly glow bowling time the staff woudn't allow you to set up the bowling scoring system yourself.

Midsummer Morn by: Clara Marcelle Farrar Greene (1840-????)

A wondrous blue of summerous  sky,
Adream of fair, sweet weather,
A floating cloud-band airlly,
joined hand-in-hand together.

A rippling sea, of upland-grass,
by the daisy-foam fecked over,
A fleet of butterflies,sailing past
to anchor in the clover;
A gay flotilla on fairy wing,
by the summer-breeze,
tossed brightly for the butterfly will
is a fickle thing, and his fancy changeth lightly.
An oriole, with happy wing,
above her nested-darlings,
in Mother-Pride, all quivering,
to tell her neighbor Starlings.
A leaning wall of Willow Green, a glimpse of shining river,
a wild rose hedge, all has been, and will again, forever,
O summer vision flushed anew!
O morn of fair-sweet weather,
life is still young, and love is true,
and both, divine Together!

This poem was picked by Gary and Ben because it remind's us both of summer. We hope you enjoy.

Sylvia's Acadia Experience

If I had to sum up my experience here at Acadia I would say it was  positive and eye opening. The year and a half I was here I learned a lot about myself. The first thing is that I learned  if I put my mind to a task I can  achieve it. The second would have to be my independence.  I learned that in order to be independent you need to take control and work hard. With the knowledge I have experienced here, I am able to move in with my boyfriend Howard and have the opportunity to be independent and put into practice what I have learned here.

I would like to thank all of the clinical staff for helping me recognize the potential I did have, that I thought wasn't there.

To all of the residential staff who worked with me on a regular basis, thank you for not only pointing out my flaws at times, but for also pointing out when my attitude had changed for the better, and for confirming that I was ready to move on.

To my "B1 brothers, " Thank you for treating me with respect, & all of the nightly card games as well as SORRY games with a cup of coffee in one hand, and a move "7" spaces card in the other. I will miss you all.

Once again thank you for my positive experience here at Acadia!

AMF Pikesville Lane Bowling Review

 AMF Pikesville Lane Bowling Review
Written by Stephen L.
AMF Pikesville Lanes is a neat and modern bowling alley, located in Pikesville, MD. The center has 40 lanes, and features both regular ten-pin bowling as well as duck-pin bowling. It has 20 ten-pin Lanes and 20 duckpin lanes. The center has automatic Qubica Bowland-X scoring for both the ten-pin and duck-pin bowling lanes. The center provides a fun bowling experience, however it is still very much a traditional bowling alley. There is not much to do here besides bowling, however the bowling experience is really fun.
